Remembering heroes...

FOOTBALLING memorabilia of a Netherton hero will go on display along with treasures of Duncan Edwards in the town's museum.

Belongings of Former England and West Bromwich Albion player Joe Smith will be on show along with those of Dudley's favourite son at the Beautiful Game exhibition.

Smith was signed by Albion in 1910 and played for England in the 1920s.

Born in Netherton in 1890, Smith played in 247 out of 252 first division games from 1919 to 1925 and played for West Bromwich Albion when they became first division champions.

Smith, who won two England caps, joined Birmingham City in 1926 before moving to Worcester City as manager.

The display features memorabilia from Midland football clubs including programmes, TV footage, football shirts, photos, newspaper cuttings, archives and artefacts.

International shirts and caps, photographs and memorabilia belonging to Duncan Edwards will also be on show.

Councillor Charles Fraser Macnamara, Dudley Council's cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "We often forget the borough raised two England players.

"This is a great opportunity to learn about the wider success of West Midlands football."

The Beautiful Game exhibition runs until September 9 at the St James Road venue.
