Camp slam stoppage

The decision to pull Darren McDermott out of the biggest fight of his career due to a cut has left trainer Dean Powell "flabbergasted".

The second round stoppage due to the injury under the challengers left eye has led to some cutting comments from his camp towards the doctor who pulled him out.

Powell said: "I am flabbergasted. It is not Wayne's fault, that is part of the business.

"He (Darren) could have cut Wayne and it could have happened the other way, that is not the issue.

"It is not Wayne Elcock's fault, it is the doctor.

"It is the business, they have clashed heads, it is one of those things.

"If he (the doctor) would have given him one round to work on it and then said no, I would have said fair enough, but he just said no straight away."

McDermott was also left fuming by the stoppage and angry his corner were not allowed to patch him up before a decision was made.

He said: "I just feel he (the doctor) should have let Jimmy Tibbs, one of the best in the business, go back to the corner and do his work and then look at it after the interval, but the referee asked the doctor and he said no.

"It (the cut) was under my eye. Jimmy Tibbs put a swab on my eye after they called it to a halt, and it stopped bleeding straight away.

"There was a bit of swelling but Jimmy said he would have pulled that out within 30 seconds, would have closed the cut up and it wouldn't have bled again until the end of the fight. "
