CD - Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings - Counting Crows

AFTER a long wait, Counting Crows are back with their fifth studio album and this time they've brought a theme with them.

Concept albums always strike something of a dubious note for me and Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings is no different. The first half of the album is intended to get you in the mood for a Saturday night out whilst the second half is more geared toward lazy Sundays, and although many of the songs really are quite catchy, I'm really not sure it works.

Counting Crows usually undercut their cheerful pop hits with a fair whack of melancholy lyrics, which for those of us who don't mind thinking while we listen is no bad thing.

Unfortunately it doesn't really fit in with the Saturday night out sentiment, and anyone actually listening to the first half of the album isn't likely to be in the mood for a night on the town after listening to lyrics like 1492's "Oh where did we disappear into the silence that surrounds us and then drowns us in the end."

On the other hand, several of the songs on the Sunday morning segment like When I Dream of Michelangelo are far more cheerful and happily suited to an early evening chillout.

The album's parts are greater than their sum in this case and they could honestly be put to better effect if they were jumbled up and the concept removed altogether.
