DVD - Enchanted (PG)
THE film begins with a classic 2-D animation sequence set in a fairytale world filled with princes and princesses, magic and giants.
Surrounded by dozens of cute animals, Giselle (voiced and later played by Amy Adams) sings about her desire to find her one true love.
Meanwhile, a handsome prince (James Marsden) overhears and they meet, fall in love, and plan to marry the next day.
However, the prince's evil stepmother, Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon), has other ideas and pushes Giselle down a well causing her to end up in the real world.
Where Giselle actually ends up is New York - a place where there are no happily ever afters.
There she meets a cynical divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey) while waiting for her prince to rescue her.
Although clearly aimed at children, Enchanted has one or two moments for adults as well as some intelligent send-ups of classic Disney fairy tales.
The beginning with its so-over-the-top-it's-clever parody of Disney's own back catalogue and a scene where a whistle-while-you-work style song attracts real vermin instead of cute forest animals are two of the best.
However, it's hard to say if the film was intended as such an intelligent send up of Disney's own fairy tales or if it was just a lucky accident.
Either way, Enchanted is one of those films that children will undoubtedly love and adults will be dragged to see.
