DVD - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (15)
THE Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is one of those films where the plot is laid out in the title, which might be why no-one really turned out to watch this gem on the big screen.
But how Jesse James got so badly overlooked in awards season will be a question that never stops being asked.
This film is truly beautiful, languid and rolling landscapes peppered with an almost heavenly presence in the form of narrator Hugh Ross who is to Jesse James, what Richard Dreyfuss was to Stand By Me, and launches you into the film in such a way that you really want to love it.
There's no disappointment waiting and the performances, especially Casey Affleck's uneasy Robert Ford, who in turn idolises and fears James before inevitably turning on him. Brad Pitt's turn as Jesse James ranges from enigmatic to paranoid and ruthless, showing where the legend could spring from, while giving us opportunity to see why he needed to be stopped. From its sweeping cornfields to sinister night-time horse rides, Andrew Dominik expertly steers every aspect of this movie.
