CREATIVE artists across Stourbridge stood up for children in Syria and raised more than £2,200 for charity during a varied programme of events.

Under the banner of ‘Artists 4 Syria’, more than 210 artists, musicians, writers and town residents banded together to take part in events ranging from a mountain climb to a yoga session and poetry event.

All the events, which took place between November 5 and 16, helped raise £2,285 for the ‘White Helmets’ Syrian civil defence force.

The first event was a 5km run from Wollaston pub Katie Fitzgerald’s, before an art exhibition and choral music event at St John’s Church.

A book released on Amazon with contributions from local writers also helped to bring in funds, while a Dance 4 Syria featuring several local and national DJ's, and a Holistic 4 Syria event at Global Wellbeing in Enville Street also raised money for the cause.

Other events included a 50 mile and 20 mile cycle ride, a Quiz 4 Syria hosted by Ian Marrey and Cllr Pete Lowe and finally on Wednesday, November 16, a group climbed Cadair Idris in Wales – a seven mile walk covering 3,300 feet and – at times – 70 mile-an-hour winds.

Organiser and musician Eddy Morton, co-owner of the Wollaston pub, said: “This was a great joint effort by many people and local organisations and we thank everyone who contributed.

“The White Helmets Syrian civil defence force do incredible work on the ground in Syria against overwhelming odds.

“And alongside all our events, we have collected over 800 signatures of artists and supporters demanding the cessation of bombing of civilians in Syria and the lifting of the siege of Aleppo to allow humanitarian aid.”
