THERE is a different face at the helm of Halesowen’s classical music scene after the town’s popular orchestra appointed a new conductor.

Flautist Christopher Hoggarth brings a wealth of conducting work to Halesowen Orchestra, including leading wind ensembles, choirs and musical theatre.

As well as now conducting The Halesowen Orchestra, Christopher is the founder and conductor of the chamber orchestra Sinfonia Silvana and has also worked with Nottingham, York and Warwickshire symphony orchestras.

Passionate about exploring new music, the4 new conductor has also worked with Miles Hancock’s Breakbeat Concerto for orchestra, while conducting concerto works with soloists including Balazs Hegedus, Matt Glendening and 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

Halesowen Orchestra member Sue Miles said: “We are very lucky to have someone of Christopher’s talent conducting our orchestra.

“We’re all looking forwards to our first concert under Christopher’s leadership later this year.”

The Halesowen Orchestra, which was founded in 1986, was once described as “one of Halesowen's hidden jewels” by MP James Morris, and the group are on the lookout for new players.

Looking to expand its string sections, the orchestra is open to players of a reasonable standard, regardless of age or previous orchestral experience, but new members will require a good level of enthusiasm and dedication.

Rehearsals take place on Monday nights – during term time – between 7.45pm and 9.45pm at Leasowes High School, in Kent Road.
