Jennifer Garner has joked she thought her new film Men, Women And Children was a horror movie when she first heard about it - because it highlights how dangerous the internet can be.

The mother-of-three plays an over-protective parent who monitors her daughter's social media conversations in Jason Reitman's ensemble cast drama, based on a book about how adults and children communicate while trying to navigate online dangers.

Jennifer, speaking at the film's premiere in Los Angeles, said: "I thought it was a horror movie!

"Then I read the book and I realised this movie is a family film compared to the book. What Jason and Erin (Cressida who co-wrote the script) do beautifully in their adaptation is they let there be hope. It's not just an endless black hole at the end of the film."

The actress - whose husband is Ben Affleck - insisted she did not really relate to the world of social media portrayed in the film and joked her friends were all too boring to post crazy things online.

Jennifer said: "My kids are too little, so I'm not even going there at all, and I don't use social media. None of my friends are totally wacko, posting crazy stuff that they'd be embarrassed by the next day.

"That for me would be kind of fun, because my friends are all stodgy and boring like me!"

Other stars of the film at the premiere included Adam Sandler, Breaking Bad's Dean Norris, Ansel Elgort and JK Simmons.

Adam, who has two children, admitted the film raised scary questions for parents.

He joked: "You jump into wanting to home school them after this movie. 'Let's do this. I don't want you meeting anyone at all!' But that's going to happen, hopefully they do the right thing."
