ITV is launching a new big-budget rival to BBC hit Strictly Come Dancing.

Scheduled for broadcast in 2017, Dance Dance Dance will follow a format developed by the makers of The Voice, Talpa Media, a Dutch production company which ITV acquired last year.

“The show celebrates iconic dance routines from pop, movies and theatre,” an insider told the Press Association.

“Celebrities and their partners will recreate much-loved numbers with the use of the most up-to-date technology on a truly epic scale.”

The six-part series also promises special effects to evoke the original choreography and enhance the performance for the watching millions.

Each week, one couple will be voted out following a critique from a judging panel. Dance Dance Dance drew impressive ratings when it premiered in Holland last year.

ITV has enjoyed success with singing talent series such as Pop Idol and Simon Cowell’s The X Factor, but dance-based shows have proved more of a challenge.

A more recent effort was Stepping Out hosted by Davina McCall, which was broadcast in 2013 but ran for only one series.
