AN artistic six-year-old has seen his work hoisted high into the air for all of Gornal to see, after being picked as the winner of a town flag competition.

Jack Rogers, from Roberts Primary School, was chosen to have his colourful design made into the flag, which was officially unveiled by the mayor of Dudley, councillor Melvyn Mottram.

The year two pupil’s creation beat off competition from 1,000 other entries from children at Roberts Primary, Red Hall and The Straits after it was chosen for its colourful and simple design – depicting children walking handin- hand, a rainbow and sunshine.

Ward councillor Dave Branwood, who proposed the original idea to have a flag for Gornal, said: “We felt Jack’s design summed up what the whole completion was about, the children of Gornal coming together and looking to the future rather than including elements of the past.”

The new town flag is now flying proudly on a 12m high pole in front of Lower Gornal Library, after Gornal Business Watch successfully applied for funding from North Dudley Area Committee’s capital allocation fund.

The mayor also presented 17 runners- up from the three schools with certificates during the unveiling event.
