BREAKING NEWS: B-MET and Stourbridge College principal Dame Braddock resigns
12:49am Sunday 22nd September 2013 in News
THE principal of Birmingham Metropolitan College Dame Christine Braddock, who presided over the college's controversial take over of Stourbridge College, has resigned.
Dame Braddock hit the headlines last week when the giant college banned the niqab before reversing the decision after a public outcry by Muslim students. Birmingham Councillor Waseem Zafaar, who clashed with the principal over the college banning the niqab, was shocked by the resignation.
He said: "I would like wish her well in the future. She has been an outstanding leader in the education sector.
"I didn't agree with the college banning the niqab, but have upmost respect for her and the college in listening to the people, the 9,000 who signed a petition in 48 hours and thus making a u-turn."
He added: "It's not easy to admit your wrong and by reversing the decision, shows the college was brave enough to correct their mistake."
Birmingham Metropolitan College came under fire earlier this month for refusing to reveal the exam results for Stourbridge students after the controversial merger this Spring.
The college has over 36,000 students and is one of the biggest colleges in the country after incorporating the former Sutton and Josiah Mason colleges.
Christine Braddock was made a Dame in this year's New Year's Honours and has over 30 years experience of leading further education colleges.
