A WAR memorial in Woodsetton could be on the move to help people honour fallen war heroes.

Britain is preparing to remember the start of World War One a century ago and campaigners are using the anniversary to highlight the plight of the memorial in Swan Village.

Woodsetton councillors Adam Aston, Kieran Casey and Ken Finch are leading fundraising initiatives to get the memorial moved from its current location outside the Mount Tabor Church on Sedgley Road.

Cllr Aston said: “The church is not in use and the war memorial is gradually in decline, furthermore because of its proximity to the road there is no way that anyone could ever hold a service on the remembrance day, something that we feel is a shame considering the memorial contains the names of local people from Swan Village, Woodsetton and Parkes Hall who went and fought in the Great War.”

The councillors have teamed up with the Royal British Legion, Woodsetton Charitable Trust and High Arcal School on a project to get the monument relocated to a larger site where it could be the centrepiece of a service.

Cllr Aston added: “At the moment we are in the process of working with High Arcal to include an educational element, looking at the names on the memorial and indeed linking this in with the centenary of WWI, we are hoping to receive some funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund who are running a programme specifically for these sorts of projects.

“We want to ensure that our ward has a place to remember those who have given their lives for our freedom, at the moment we have a memorial but because of its location a proper service cannot be attended.”
