DUDLEY borough residents are being warned to be extra vigilant after a pensioner was conned out of her cash.

The 78-year-old woman from Cradley Heath was the victim of heartless hoaxers who claimed to be Dudley Council staff sent to carry out work in her home.

The conmen got away with hundreds of pounds prompting the authority to issue an alert to residents across the region.

Councillor Steve Waltho, Dudley cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: “I want to ensure that all of our residents are safe in their homes and aware that bogus callers may target them by calling at their property claiming to be council employees.

“I recommend that residents check any identity cards very closely as they are easily faked – and if in doubt ring either Dudley Council Plus or the Repairs Management Centre to ensure someone is due to call.

“Residents should not worry about making the caller wait while the call is made as genuine visitors will understand.”

Anyone in doubt should call Dudley Council Plus on 0300 555 2345, council tenants should call the Repairs Management Centre 0300 555 8283 to ensure an appointment is logged and anyone who thinks bogus callers are at large in their neighbourhood should call the dedicated bogus caller hotline on 01384 812045.
