DUDLEY’S young people were the centre of attention at an event to celebrate some of the borough’s young stars.

The tenth annual youth awards ceremony, organised by Dudley Youth Council, together with the council’s youth service, took place at Dormston School on March 7.

Rap artist Roach Killa performed at the show and presented awards to Megan Hartshorne, aged 11, and Alexander Meads, 16, who won in the new category of being an inspiration to others.

The contribution to school and college award went to at High Arcal School head boy Luke Bodin, 16, who helps raise money for Cancer Research.

The green award was awarded to Sarah Paskin, 13, James Harper, 15, and Jonathon Anderson, 18, while the arts and entertainment award was given to Alexander Gale, 12, for his dedication to drama.

The sports award was too close to call and shared between joint nominees, brothers Blake and Cameron Hewson and Emma Bradley, 12.

Dudley Council’s Family and Adolescent Support Team (FAST) mentor project took the honours for the community, charity and voluntary group award and the Mary Growcott award for inspirational adult went to High Arcal School music teacher Simon Platford.

Councillor Tim Crumpton, Dudley cabinet member for children’s services, said: “A fantastic night organised by a great bunch young people. Dudley Youth Council members give so much of their time with so much enthusiasm. Dudley should be proud to have such committed sons and daughters.”
