Emergency services call for drivers to be aware

ROAD users in the borough are being urged to be blue lights aware.

West Midlands Ambulance Service say they are busier than ever and more of its vehicles are on the streets.

Combined with the number of police and firefighter vehicles racing to various emergencies, it means motorists need to know what to do should they see blue lights approaching.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “Although there is advice in the Highway Code about what to do in such situations, many drivers panic when they hear a siren or see blue lights coming.”

A short video entitled Blue Light Aware? has been produced on behalf of all the emergency services for motorists wondering what to do when they come across a blue light vehicle en-route to an emergency and is available to view online.

The spokesman continued: “Many of the calls we respond to are life and death situations where every second counts.

“Our crews rely on the help of other road users when they’re on a ‘blue light’ journey.

“The video provides advice on what to do if a blue light vehicle comes up behind you or is coming the other way. We would urge everyone to make sure that they know what to – your actions could save a life.”
