DRAMATIC CCTV footage released by West Midlands Police unveils the ploys of real-life thieves and con artists in the region in a bid to get shoppers and revellers to spot the pickpocket this festive season.

As Christmas shoppers start to flood the high street, revellers celebrate in their local bars and clubs or start to enjoy the festive cheer of Britain’s largest outdoor Christmas market in Birmingham, people are urged to think before they leave their valuables vulnerable to thieves.

From distraction techniques to bumping into people in a crowded marketplace − the videos show people falling victim to such crimes, causing police to remind the public to be on their guard to protect themselves and others.

Sergeant Andy Gregory, from the force crime reduction team, said: "Year on year we have seen people get wiser to these kinds of crimes which means that the number of offences have fallen, but that doesn’t mean we can become complacent.

"We’re hoping that by revealing the thieves’ tips and tricks the public can stay one step ahead."

The crime prevention video shows a thief, operating at the German market in 2012, who brazenly stole a young woman’s phone while her friend was filming them enjoying their night out.

The clip is followed by a gang who operate to distract a woman sat on a wall outside a nightclub as they steal from her bag.

All the men involved were quickly caught and brought before the courts, where they were convicted of theft and fined.

Sgt Gregory added: "Our advice is to wear a bag that goes across your body to hold your most valuable items. Never leave your bag unattended and be aware of what’s going on around you.

"We’ll have officers out patrolling the towns, cities and region’s night spots throughout the festive season to prevent people from falling victim to crime − but we just want to raise awareness so people can also help themselves.

"If you have any information about pickpockets or see someone acting suspiciously please call 101 and speak to an officer."
