DUDLEY Deaf Children's Society couldn't hide their delight after being awarded £2,000 cash boost through the Lloyd's Bank Community Fund.

Membership Secretary Shelagh James said: "We're absolutely over the moon with this award and we want to thank everyone who voted for us."

The Society is run by a local group of parents and professionals to support children with hearing loss and their families from diagnosis up to 18-year-olds and beyond.

Some of the money has already been put to good use by setting up a homework club and a newspaper which is specifically aimed at deaf teenagers.

However the majority of the money will go towards organising family events, including a Christmas party, summer trips and visits to the pantomime.

Shelagh James added: "These social events really benefit all deaf children throughout Dudley. They provide opportunities for the children to meet each other and help to develop their confidence and communication skills."
