DRINK driving figures fell by more than a third following the West Midlands Police 2014 Christmas crackdown.

A total of 2,080 drivers were stopped and checked throughout December in the force area with 225 of those breathalysed proving positive compared to 363 from the previous year.

Police also continued their policy of naming every driver who was charged with drink driving in an effort to make more motorists think about the consequences before getting behind the wheel of car while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Inspector Greg Jennings, who led the campaign, said: "Our primary aim is to make the roads safer for all and Christmas is always a peak period for us, with so many people out celebrating and perhaps behaving differently to normal.

“By revealing people's names, it makes it all the more real and if it deters just one person from taking to the road after a night out on the tiles, then it's worthwhile.”
