CREATIVE Black Country schoolchildren are being encouraged to put pen to paper and enter a poetry competition.

Energy company E.ON is encouraging youngsters aged between five and 11 to come up with a poem related to energy, with winning entries being published in a compilation book.

The Powering Poetry competition forms part of the company's broader educational activities, developed to inform children about where energy comes from and how it is used in everyday lives.

Alison Gibson, senior community relations executive at E.ON, said: “We’re really keen to encourage any pupils who are interested in energy to get their creative caps on and compose a poem.

“As well as seeing their work in print and getting a book voucher, each winner’s school will receive a set of fiction and non-fiction energy-themed books which we’ve carefully selected with help from a panel of expert key stage 1 and 2 teachers.”

The closing date is Tuesday May 5.
