A MAN who walked into a steel processing plant's warehouse and climbed on top of a crane sparked an emergency incident lasting nearly eight hours in Dudley.

The emergency services were alerted after the man, aged in his 50s, arrived on the premises of Servosteel in Pensnett Road, opposite Russells Hall Hospital, at about 1.25pm yesterday. There was concern for his safety after he got on to the crane inside a warehouse.

Trained West Midlands Police force negotiators talked to the man, who eventually came down from the crane at around 9pm.

Ambulance crews and firefighters stood by as police dealt with the incident. A police spokesman said the man was not connected with the company.

Sarah Buxton, police spokesman, said: "He was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital in order for him to get the help he needed."

Phil Guest, executive director of Servosteel, said the company "was not in a position to comment" as the incident had all been dealt with by the emergency services.
