TO mark today’s World Mental Health Day, libraries across Dudley borough are promoting their collection of self-help books.

The Books on Prescription scheme provides self-help reading for a range of common mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, phobias and eating disorders.

They are available to all members of the library as well as being available ‘on prescription’ – where they have been recommended to patients by GPs or other health professionals.

Among the other reading schemes at the borough’s libraries include mood-boosting books, which is a collection of uplifting novels, non-fiction and poetry selected by readers, and books for dementia, for sufferers of dementia and their relatives and carers.

World Mental Health Day focuses on what can be done to help prevent people developing mental health problems and providing the right information, guidance and support in childhood and adolescence.

It is estimated that one in four adults and one in ten children are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year, which can affect their ability to sustain relationships, work, or getting through the day.
