GORNAL residents will be getting into the festive spirit on Friday (December 4) when a community led Christmas fair and lights switch on takes place.

Events will be centred around Gornal Library, Zoar Methodist Church and the Darby and Joan Club.

Santa will be arriving by sleigh at 5pm before Gornal veteran Alf Green and Red Hall Primary School pupil Chloe Harford - who designed this year's Gornal flag - switch on the lights at 6pm.

Local radio personality Gornal Trace will be on hand to compare the event and there will also be live entertainment, including performances from the Zoar Choir and Fusion Rock.

There will also be plenty of stalls, fairground rides, a raffle and mulled wine on offer, while local author Ned Williams will be on hand to sign copies of his new book about the Gornal area.

The event has been organised by Ellowes Hall Tenants and Residents Association and the Gornal Together initiative, who worked together to raise money to decorate the area for the festive period.
