AFTER more than two months on the sea, amateur Kingswinford rower Lee Felton has completed one of the world’s toughest challenges by rowing across the Atlantic.

Biology teacher Lee, a member of Dudley Rowing Club, and his team-mate and friend Sean Lannon, finished rowing 10,000km across the pond as part of the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge in the early hours of this morning (Feb 24).

Lee has battled 60ft waves, terrible seasickness, dehydration and numerous capsizes as he achieved a feat which less people have done than have been into space.

The pair set off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on December 20 and finally reached the finish line in English Harbour, in Antigua, in the early hours of this morning – one day ahead of schedule.

They had picked up the pace in recent weeks, after going through some of the tougher weather the challenge has ever encountered.

Speaking to the News last week, Lee’s mum Mandy said that she hoped the pair “slowed down” as their families weren't heading out to the Caribbean until Monday (Feb 23) and did not want to miss their arrival into the harbour.

But luckily for Mandy, she got her wish and was one of the first people to greet Lee as he stepped onto dry land for the first time in 65 days.

Following their arrival into Antigua, Lee wrote on his Facebook page: “We Did it! Just got into bed on Dry land after 65days at sea. Will respond to the 350+ very kind messages over the next few days z z z - thank you for all the support X X.”

After a friend commented about a boat party to celebrate him returning to his home in Dubai, Lee replied: “Never going in a boat again!”

It was a mixture of nerves and excitement for this pair as they entered their last few hours at sea, although they’ve had their fair share of thrills in the last few days.

Lee woke up to find a huge oil tanker on their course, and after contacting them they moved out of the way, only to find another one coming at them!

Luckily, all was well and the pair are now having some much needed rest.

We will have more updates from Lee and the Felton family on our website throughout this week, so keep checking back.
