A MONUMENT honouring Dudley's heroes of the Great War will be restored to its former glory.
Friends of Buffery Park have received a £14,620 grant from the War Memorial Trust to repair the much-loved Grazebrook War Memorial.
The group, which has been working on the project with Mark Newall of BHN architects, has also put £5,000 towards the project.
The memorial's crowning glory, a stone cross and shaft, was broken around 50 years ago in mysterious circumstances.
Although it was replaced with a smaller one years later, the cash will allow restoration work to get under way and a new, bigger cross will soon take pride of place.
The new-look memorial, which was built by the Grazebrook family in memory of their son, Captain Charles Avery Grazebrook, who was killed in World War One, will be unveiled in June.
Steve Briscoe, chairman of the Friends group said the project had been "very rewarding" and said plans were in the pipeline to make further improvements to the park in Grazebrook Road.
