SIX talented children are celebrating success in the Dudley Young Writer of the Year competition.
The junior scribes beat off stiff competition from fellow borough primary school pupils to collect awards in categories for fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Elizabeth Wilkinson from Thorns Primary School, won first prize in the ‘best fiction’ category in the seven to nine age group, while Laurence Holder from St James’s CE Primary School came up trumps in the ‘best poetry’ category and Grace Harris from Brierley Hill Primary School, took home the ‘best non-fiction’ title.
In the nine to 11 age group, the 'best non-fiction' award went to Charlie Walker from St James’s CE Primary School, Kizzy Tolkien from Dudley Wood Primary School was crowned the 'best fiction' winner, while her fellow pupil Melody Horton won the 'best poetry' category.
Melody's poem was also named as the competition's outright winner, bagging her the top prize, a Kindle from Tesco, Dudley.
All winners collected a trophy for their schools along with a voucher for a free coaching session for beginners at Hagley Golf and Country Club.
School improvement consultant Linda Raybould said the standard of entries had surpassed previous years and congratulated the young budding writers who had taken part.
