KIND-hearted volunteers have come up with an innovative way to help households running short of food.

The Food for Thought group in Sedgley swaps unwanted items for food and other household necessities such as cleaning supplies and toiletries.

Items, including books and toys, are advertised via a Facebook page, with the food it is swapped for being put into a parcel people in crisis or donated to the Black Country Foodbank.

Rebecca Gentle said she got involved as she was concerned that families may be struggling to feed their children over the summer holidays.

She said: "Jackie Jevons, who runs the Facebook group, is doing a great job and making a real difference to local people.

“People who want to help can join the Facebook group or gather food donations and we can arrange to pick them up and pass them on.

“Everything they give will make a huge difference to people struggling to feed their families.”

Dudley North MP Ian Austin added: “It’s terrible that people are going hungry in the 21st century, but it’s fantastic that Jackie, Rebecca and the Sedgley Food for Thought group have stepped in to help them.

“It shows how volunteers are making a difference in the local community and I hope local people will join the Facebook page and get involved.”
