NEWENT Town Council has replaced four fishing platforms at the Lake in Newent with the help of the Angling Trust.

The council successfully applied to the trust for a grant of over £4,000 from its Fishery Improvement Fund.

The original platforms were installed in 2002 to improve access for all, but the platform supporting posts had started rotting. The new platforms are made from recycled plastic and should last for many years to come.

Newent mayor Cllr Edward Wood said “We are delighted that the council was able to secure funding from the Angling Trust to replace the platforms.

"Newent Lake is very much one of the jewels in the town’s crown. It is owned and maintained by the town council for the benefit of residents and visitors who can enjoy leisurely strolls, picnics and occasional band concerts, exercise on an outdoor gym or just sit on the benches and contemplate the ducks, coots, and heron.

"Old maps show the lake as the fishpond of Newent Court, so it is fitting that although the grand mansion itself has gone, the lake remains a favourite spot for local anglers."

Until this year, fishing licenses were issued free of charge but during a recent debate this policy was challenged on the grounds that the cost of managing the fish, maintaining the banks, installing fishing platforms, administration and warden services should be met at least in part by the 70 or so people that fish there.

A nominal charge of £10 (£5 for juniors) will therefore be introduced at the next season, to reduce the burden on ratepayers.
