THE antics of a brazen burglar captured on camera while carrying out a raid on the studios of Black Country Radio will be featured in a forthcoming episode of BBC1’s Caught Red Handed.

Prolific offender Jason Pettit was pictured on CCTV while stealing more than £8,000 worth of broadcast equipment from the then Stourbridge based studios of the popular BCR community radio station which was knocked off the air as a result of the theft.

Pettit, of Stourbridge Road, Lye, had disabled CCTV cameras at the scene of the raid but missed one which captured him on camera carrying out the break-in at St John’s Church off Stourbridge ring road on September 9 2016.

Unfortunately for him, he was recognised by a police officer and was traced and arrested at his home on September 20 last year.

After initially denying his involvement in the raid - Pettit, who at the time was on licence from prison, subsequently admitted to the offence and was jailed for two years by Recorder Michelle Heeley QC.

None of the stolen property has ever been recovered and a second person believed to have been involved in the crime was never apprehended.

But the community rallied behind BCR, loaning equipment and making donations, to help the station get back on the air within 24 hours.

Alex Totney, CEO of Black Country Radio, said: “ This was an exceptionally difficulty time for us. To be broken into, and much of our equipment stolen was shocking, let alone the fact that at the time we were based in a local church being used for a variety of community purposes.

"Luckily the commitment of everyone involved in the station and support of the local community and our loyal listeners has meant the station has gone on from strength to strength.”

The footage caught on CCTV will be featured on BBC1 on Wednesday October 4 at 11.45am.
