A HALESOWEN councillor will take to his bike with hundreds of football fans to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

Councillor Stuart Henley plans to cycle 145 miles in two days from Barnsley's football ground to Ajax's Amsterdam Arena, alongside two friends William Campbell and Peter Bennett on June 1-3.

'Football to Amsterdam' is a national fundraising initiative which sees 400 football fans cycle from England to Amsterdam in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the disease, which kills one man every 45 minutes according to the charity - equating to two men during the length of a football match.

The route will take the cyclists from Barnsley to Hull to the Netherlands via ferry and then across the flat lands of Holland to the capital.

The Halesowen North councillor also took part in last year's event after experiencing a health scare and is keen that the cycle raises awareness of male cancers, which he said are often not spoken about publicly.

He is due to start training with his co-cyclists after preparation was hampered by the recent bad weather.

He added: "We all pull each other through."

Alongside the charity cycle, the UKIP councillor will be holding a fundraising event on Saturday, May 5, at Parkes Hall Social Club in Woodsetton.

Prizes up for grabs in the charity auction include two tickets to a Kidderminster Harriers game, a signed Walsall FC bag and a signed Baggies pennant.

The councillor has also designed Black Country-themed cycling gear for the occasion, which can also be purchased online via the Facebook page Team Black Country Boys 2018.

All proceeds from the event and the cycling gear will be donated to Prostate Cancer UK.
