MANCHESTER United legend Tommy Docherty pulled the first pint of a tribute ale brewed in honour of Dudley’s greatest ever footballer.

Sadler’s Brewery in Lye unveiled its Duncan Edwards Tribute Ale at a special celebration event commemorating the life of the former Priory School pupil, who was tragically killed in the Munich air disaster in February 1958.

And former Scotland international ‘The Doc’ was the guest of honour at the event, entertaining attendees with his own recollections of playing against Duncan and the rest of a formidable England side.

Duncan was just 21 years old at the time of the crash, which also claimed the lives of eight other Manchester United players.

The Sadler’s event is one of many organised by The Duncan Edwards Tribute marking 60 years since his death. The brewery is also sponsoring a special 60th anniversary tribute dinner at the Copthorne Hotel in Dudley on October 11.

Duncan was just 18 when he inspired England to beat Tommy Docherty’s Scotland 7-2 in 1955.

Mr Docherty said: “Duncan was outstanding in the game. Making 60 yard passes with ease, moving forward with strength and pace and performing like a colossus in defence – he was the finished article at 18, the complete footballer.

“Without doubt, if it had not been for the Munich Disaster, Duncan Edwards would have gone on to become the greatest player in the world.

“I am delighted to be part of this Tribute that will ensure his heritage will be kept alive in the Black Country and throughout the world – in every country that football is played.”

Ian King, Sales Director of Sadler’s added: “The reaction to the launch of the Duncan Edwards Tribute Ale has been fantastic and it was a pleasure to see such a large and enthusiastic crowd join us at the launch – to sample the Ale and listen to the humour and football nostalgia of Tommy Docherty.”
