MOTORISTS across the region are being urged to take care as thunderstorms and heavy downpours are set to persist throughout the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Residents from the Black Country and North Worcestershire witnessed spectacular lightning strikes during the storm throughout Saturday (May 26) night and into this morning.

Forecasts suggest we can expect more of the same throughout today and tomorrow.

West Midlands Fire service has issued advice to people heading out on the roads and urged them to be extra careful.

In a tweet, they said: “It looks as though heavy rain and thunderstorms are here for the day.

“If this causes roads to flood, please do not put yourself in danger by driving into the floodwater, find an alternative route.

“It may put minutes on the journey, but this is better than ruining your vehicle.

A spokesman for Haden Cross fire station added people should also consider their braking distances in the wet weather.

Sunday’s weather will continue to be thundery throughout the day and into the evening, with top temperatures hitting the 20 degrees Celsius mark.

Typically, Bank Holiday Monday also seems set to be a thundery wash-out with storms set to continue. It will be a little warmer though at around 22 degrees Celsius.
