DOZENS of people celebrated the life and achievements of Dudley peace campaigner Bert Bissell during a ceremony at Buffery Park.

The park is now home to an information board, detailing his greatest accomplishments, which was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Alan Taylor, on Saturday morning (June 30).

The board reveals how the town's first probation officer set up the Vicar Street Young Men's Bible Class, constructed a peace cairn at Ben Nevis - which he climbed 107 times - and established civic links between Dudley and Fort William.

A boulder from the summit of Ben Nevis, which was recently refurbished and moved to the park from Vicar Street - thanks to the Friends of Buffery Park, was also unveiled by cllr Taylor during the event.

Councillor Steve Waltho, founder and chairman of the Bert Bissell Memorial Society, said: "We were privileged that the mayor took time out of his busy schedule to honour a Dudley legend.

"We hope that Bert's legacy will live on for many years to come."

The event also marked the launch of this year's Bert Bissell Memorial Walk, which is now in its fifth year.

Cllr Waltho and the society's vice chairman, Shaz Saleem, will lead a group to the summit of Ben Nevis on August 16 to raise funds for YMCA Dudley.
