BNP defeated as party fails to take seats


MANY of the town's councillors retained their posts in the polls as the BNP failed to win a single seat in Dudley at the local elections.

Margaret Wilson (Lab) stayed in control of her Brierley Hill ward after scooping 963 votes with a 227 vote majority.

Cllr Wilson beat Steven Ridley (Cons) who got 736 votes, Paul Southall (UKIP) with 694 votes and John Dyer (Lib Dems) with 241 votes.

Current Mayor, David Stanley (Cons) also retained his Gornal ward seat with 1776 votes, a 651 majority - as he gets set to leave his Mayoral position in two weeks.

He defeated Philip Rowe (UKIP) who notched up 1125 votes, Stuart Turner (Lab) with 830 votes, Vicki Peace (BNP) with 513 votes and Michael Jones (Lib Dems) with 154 votes.

Quarry Bank and Dudley Wood ward saw Bryan Cotterill (Lab) retain his seat with 1376 votes, a majority of 257.

He beat off competition from Michael Wood (Cons) with 1119 votes, Julian Griffiths (BNP) with 437 votes, Helen Wimlett (UKIP) with 192 votes and John White (Lib Dems) scoring 136 votes.

Shaukat Ali (Lab) stayed in control of his St Thomas's Ward seat with 1587 votes, a majority of 581 votes. He defeated Philip Wimlett (UKIP) with 1006 votes, Louis Redding (Cons) with 555 votes, Giovanna Faulkner (Lib Dems) with 161 votes and Tony Barnsley (Ind) with 135 votes.

In Sedgley ward, Michael Evans (Cons) retained his seat with 2318 votes, a majority of 642 votes. Following the resignation of Charles Fraser Macnamara, a second seat went to Geoffrey Perry (Cons) with 1676 votes. They defeated Robert Dudley (UKIP) with 784 votes, Parshottam Das Gupta (Lab) with 573 votes, Cicely Thomas (Lab) with 540 votes and Dennis Partridge (UKIP) with 522 votes.

Speaking about the BNP's failure to gain seats throughout the Dudley borough, Leader of the Council, David Caunt said he believed "BNP support was diminishing for the third year running."
