Mosque decison a 'smack in the teeth’

THE leader of Dudley Council claims town residents have been given a “smack in the teeth” after a planning inspector granted permission for the £18 million mosque and community training and enterprise centre.

Following a four-day public inquiry last month into the plans for the massive project in Hall Street, Bristol-based Government inspector Philip Asquith upheld Dudley Muslim Association’s appeal against rejection of the scheme by the council.

Council Leader David Caunt said the decision showed the Government did not appreciate the depth of local opposition - despite 22,000 residents signing a petition against the plans.

He added: “The people of Dudley have been given a smack in the teeth with this decision by a Labour-funded quango and in giving Dudley Muslim Association outline planning permission for their major development, they have shown they do not appreciate local feelings.

“Local decisions should be left to local people,” he said.

However, the scheme could still hit stumbling blocks as the DMA now needs to submit detailed plans to council planners for full planning permission.

Mr Caunt explained how the DMA had “freely entered" into an legal agreement in 2003 with the council which says that if the build is not substantially completed by the end of 2008, the council has the right to reclaim the land at the original price plus inflation.

He added: “The council is now seriously looking into this possibility, as the council has 13 weeks to determine an application for full planning permission and the association will need to provide very detailed plans including a site survey and a travel plan.”

But DMA chairman Dr Khurshid Ahmed said they would “press ahead at full speed,” adding: “It is a victory for common sense in democracy.”

He added: “It is time for reconciliation. This decision has made my year.”

First of all congratulations to Dr. Khurshid Ahmed CBE and the Dudley Muslim Association.

The Muslim community have clearly demonstrated their patience and remained steadfast despite the bellicose rhetoric of a pathetic few.

Councillor Caunt's response is a typical one and it "smacks of islamophobia". It seems as though the council are preparing to put yet more obstacles in the way of the muslim community because it suits their political careers how shallow these small time politicians are!

I predict soon Councillor Caunt and Malcolm Davis will be drowning their sorrows together!

Clearly they have failed to comprehend the ruling of an independent planning professional whose livelihood is not effected in any way by dubious petitions unrelated to the planning process.

I think 22000 names on the petition apposing the mosque is a very low number, also the long list of silly excuses used by those protesting against the plans may have swayed the decision.

I think it’s important that democracy is not used to deny the minority community their right. Everyone at some point in their lives will find themselves in the minority, does not have to be based on religion.

I dont particularly mind about the mosque being built. I do think 22,000 protests is significant though, and believe that the idea a mosque will be available to all is quite laughable, its a mosque and therefore will cater for Muslims.

I do hope though, that the government will act in a similar 'minority pleasing' way when plans for a Hindu Temple are put forward, or a Sikh place of worship, or buddhist, or a Gay and Lesbian centre, or an Atheist centre.

No need for people to worry - Don't think this would go ahead. If they have 13 weeks to submit detailed drawings - and if submitted straight away this would be approved mid September. There is no way the site could be built by the end of 2008 especially if there is outstanding private interests to be acquired and a compulsary purchase order. If 22,000 residents have signed a petition maybe the petition should be renewed or continued. £18million seems quite a bit of money would it not be better if a mosque was made smaller and built for far less money and the money invested into Dudley which is turning into a ghost town so that people are drawn back to the Black Country. As a resident of Dudley I want to know what is in it for me and my family. If the DMA have such "big plans" for Dudley let's see them put something back into Dudley. The building looks impressive but I am wondering how it will fit into the local area it looks like something that will be seen for miles around my main concern is the location and size. One thing most people however can agree on is that Hall Street is an eye sore. I am just glad that I won't be overlooking either and I wonder how this will affect local business.

After reading Solemi from Dudley`s response to the mosques approval my blood boils.
Who is he or anyone who is in favor for this mosque to have the nerve to say that 22,000 names on a petition is a low number.
Do those 22,000 people not have a voice anymore?
Does their opinion not count?
I THINK NOT!
Those 22,000 people are people who have lived in Dudley all their lives.
Who is some inspector from Bristol to ignore so many people, does he live in Dudley.
I THINK NOT!
I would have loved to have heard the decision made if plans had been applied for in Bristol.

Sam , DUDLEY

P.S Malcolm Davis Keep up the good work!
