FACILITIES at Sledmere community centre have been given a boost following an investment of more than £3,000.

The centre in School Drive, has been fitted with a new access ramp, furniture, computers and security measures as a result of its modernisation.

The revamp has been able to go ahead thanks to a £3,400 government grant front e Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities Fund.

As part of the relaunch, youth workers and police community support officers help activities at the centre for the Sledmere and Kates Hill young people.

The venue is also the base for a new outreach worker, who is working ten hours a week until Christmas. The worker is responsible for encouraging use of the facilities and encouraging local residents to take part in adult education classes.

It is also hoped that volunteers from the local community will become involved in the centre’s running and that a management committee can be set up in the future.

Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for community renewal, said: “Sledmere Community Centre is at the heart of the estate, providing residents with a really good facility.

“It is important that the building is fully utilised and a working committee will be the first step in ensuring this.”
