A NEW initiative to tackle anti-social behaviour and keep young people safe on the streets has been launched in Dudley.
Operation Staysafe is part of safe & sound, Dudley’s Community Safety Partnership's drive to cut incidents of anti-social behaviour.
A joint project involving police and Dudley Council’s directorate of children’s services, it aims to stop children becoming victims of crime or being drawn into criminal behaviour.
One of the main issues the operation aims to tackle is the problem of under age young drinking, which is often blamed as the cause of anti social behaviour.
Last night (Friday July 4) officers patrolled the Coseley, Gornal, Sedgley and Woodsetton areas in unmarked vans - and officers spoke to a number of young people and seized alcohol.
Four young people were also taken to the safe centre - where they and their parents were interviewed by police and children’s services.
Insp Mark Sutton, neighbourhood Inspector for Dudley North, said: “This operation is about ensuring youngsters are kept safe and that parents take full responsibility for knowing what their children are doing and where they are. It is about making sure the community feels safe and that young people understand the consequences of their actions.”
