YOUNG book worms at a Lower Gornal primary school became champion readers as they triumphed in the Dudley schools library service interschool book quiz.

Fourteen pupils from Roberts Primary School, who are in years three to six, were given the challenge to read six books chosen by librarians.

The children then had to compete with other schools by answering detailed questions testing their memories and understanding of the books and beat off stiff competition from 22 schools.

In a close final for the seven to eight-year-old cate gory, Roberts beat Peters Hill and Church of the Ascension primary schools by two points.

The nine to 11-year-old group comfortably defeated Blandford Mere and Dawley Brook Primary schools by 12 points, despite losing in the first round.

Rebecca Smith, literacy coordinator at the Robert Street school, said, “We are really delighted to win this competition in both age groups for the first time.

“We are so proud of our children.

“The questions were even more demanding than we expected and needed really detailed knowledge.”

The well read pupils will now go on to the Black Country regional final.
