CHARLIE Hayter’s injury time try wrapped up a thrilling victory for the Saxons making it two wins on the bounce for the Stourton Park side.

But few would have expected a Stourbridge win after their high-flying hosts had bagged a sixth minute try in their search for a fifth win of the campaign.

In a captivating encounter, the Saxons hit back with winger Matt Williams cancelling out Dave Allen’s Blackheath opener, Stourbridge’s Cameron Brown and the home side’s Sam Windsor slotting over respective conversions.

Back-to-back converted tries from skipper Ben Hughes racked up the points for the visitors and even when Ben Ransom claimed a second score for the south London side, it was Stourbridge who continued to dominate with Matt Thomas spilling the ball just short of the line before the outstanding Matt Kvesic was denied a try moments before the break by a last ditch tackle from James Stephenson.

The Saxons continued their domination at the start of the second half and were finally rewarded when a break from front row Will Davis ended with James Rodley diving over the line for the bonus try, Brown again doing the honours with the conversion.

But that score proved a wake-up call for Blackheath who would have climbed to the top of National One if they had seen off their Black Country visitors.

They roared back into contention with three tries in 16 minutes, finally finding gaps in what had been a rock solid Stourbridge defence.

Allen crashed through for the first two – securing a rare hat-trick for the flanker – before winger Tyson Lewis scorched in at the corner.

But with Windsor managing just one conversion, and Matt Vaughan also missing a drop goal in front of the posts, the Saxons were just three points adrift going into injury time.

And after a spell of constant pressure, scrum-half Ollie Frost’s quick ball to the wing found Hayter who dived in to spark massed celebrations among the visitors.

The game also saw former Springbok World Cup star Thinus Delport come off the bench to make his Stourbridge debut while a 12-man brawl late in the game resulted in each side having a player in the bin at the full-time whistle. It really was a game that had everything.
