BOSSES at Sedgley’s Beacon Centre for the Blind are celebrating after being given a top award for its accommodation.

The Wolverhampton Road East centre took first place in the Meeting Needs of Vulnerable People category of the 2010 UK Housing Awards at a prestigious London awards event.

Working alongside Bromford Housing Group, the Beacon Centre has built an £18m state of-the-art development which provides specially adapted Extra Care apartments and facilities for partially sighted and blind borough residents.

The centre was officially opened by The Princess Royal earlier this year. Chief executive, Ian Ferguson, said: “Everybody connected with the Beacon Centre has worked extremely hard.

“We are all very pleased that our commitment to improving the daily lives of visually impaired people has been recognised at a national level.”
