STUDENTS from Dudley College joined forces with UNISON and UCU to demonstrate about higher funding cuts.

Waving banners and flags, the staff and teenagers joined forces at The Broadway campus to voice their concerns about the slashing of the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).

The EMA is a weekly means tested allowance of up to £30, which provides support to college students aged between 16 and 19 from low income households, and which is set to be axed under government plans.

The rally, which was organised by the college's Student Union, also made headlines nationally as well as locally, with the protest featuring on Channel 4 News as well as Newsnight.

Roger McKenzie, UNISON West Midlands Regional Secretary, said: "The cuts facing higher and further education are devastating. However, I am heartened by the growing alliance between students, staff and the public in response to the shattering cuts to education funding and I am proud that Dudley College is leading the way and sending out another loud and clear message."
