MARVIN Nisbett struck twice in four second half minutes as Gornal picked up all three points at home to Bewdley.

Lee Wherton had put the hosts in front midway through the first half when he latched on to Matt Martin’s through ball to complete a delightful team move.

Martin then set up Nisbett to double the lead before the striker made the game safe when he rounded keeper Darren Steadman and slotted home.

Bewdley had plenty of possession but their final ball was poor and they failed to adequately test Gornal custodian James Pemberton.

This was Gornal’s fourth league win in a row and moves them up to third in the league. Come the end of the season, it could prove a crucial result against a Bewdley side who also fancy a tilt at the title this season.

In truth the scoreline gives the wrong reflection of a game which was in the balance until Nisbett got his first 13 minutes from time.

But while Bewdley had plenty of pressure, it was Gornal who had the vital cutting edge and in Martin a player who could play the killer pass. Meanwhile, Nisbett was a constant handful for the Bewdley defence and it was little surprise he was the man to rip the game away from them in the closing stages.

The opening stages saw plenty of huff-and-puff from both sides but with little cohesion. Kristian Green fired a looping second minute effort just over the visiting bar, while Martin screwed a shot wide from 25 yards out.

For Bewdley, Craig Webb should have done better and taken more time with an effort from the edge of the box which was comfortably gathered by Pemberton. Chris Seekings was also off target.

Nisbett was the first man to get a shot on target on 20 minutes after collecting a pass and cutting in from the wing before firing a shot which Steadman acrobatically pushed wide of the near post.

Two minutes later, Gornal were in front thanks to a slick passing move which was by far the best of the match. Working the ball out of defence, Richard Young played down the wing to Martin, who cut inside from the right before hitting a reverse pass with his left which fooled the entire defence and allowed Wherton to lift the ball over Steadman with the faintest of touches.

Martin then looked to add a second when he broke from midfield with the Bewdley defence in disarray but picked the wrong option to shoot with Matt Weyman in space.

But the final 15 minutes of the half belonged to Bewdley, who managed to build consistent pressure on the Gornal backline without Pemberton ever really being troubled. Their corners in particular were disappointing.

The second half began in the same fashion, with only a last gasp deflection from the boot of defender Conor Gater denying Chris Hough an equaliser after great work from Seekings on the right wing had played in the striker six yards out.

But that was to be the closest Bewdley came to scoring.

A frenetic passage of play which saw first Ollie Smith denied a spot-kick for Bewdley and then Nisbett for the hosts, seemed to spark Gornal to life.

Green headed a looping Martin centre across the face of goal and wide of the post, while Weyman curled an effort just off target after the alert Nisbett had robbed Simon Rudd and slid a ball across the box.

Bewdley were still pressing but they couldn’t break the backline of Gater and Chris Whitehouse, while Gornal seemed to be finding some penetration.

Weyman was brilliantly denied by a full stretch Steadman, who tipped the wideman’s effort onto the post after he had broken clear.

With 13 minutes left, Nisbett gave the keeper no chance after latching on to Martin’s ball over the top and coolly slotting his shot into the corner.

Four minutes later, it was all over as Nisbett broke away on the left before rounding Steadman and firing into the empty net.
