EAGER shoppers camped overnight to be the first in the country to try out a number of facilities unveiled at the new multi-million pound Tesco Extra concept store at Burnt Tree this morning.
In addition to an extensive range of foods, the first floor level store, which is the first of its kind in the UK, also offers a Dominio’s Pizza takeaway, a healthcare service including a nutri-centre with a specialist sports nutrition section, an interactive technology zone, and a hair and beauty salon offering treatments such as tanning, hair styling, eyebrow threading and nail treatments as well as a bespoke beauty department boasting exclusive cosmetic brands and trained beauticians manning cosmetic counters.
The supermarket, which at 100,000 sq ft has more than doubled in size than the previous store and offers under store car parking, was officially opened at 10am with a ribbon cutting by shop manager Steve Goswell, the Mayor of Dudley, councillor Michael Evans and long serving Tesco staff member Anne Shinton.
As part of the long-awaited opening, the store cut a celebratory cake and served champagne, as well as making two £500 donations to Dudley charities – The Zone, which deals with young people affected by drug abuse, and The Langstone Society, which provides services to borough disabled residents and is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Store manager Steve Goswell, said: “My team and I would like to thank everyone involved in the opening ceremony and all the customers who came along to the opening of this new Tesco Extra store. We have had a very positive reaction from customers to the new services which shoppers would not expect to find in other supermarkets.”
Other facilities available in store include a café, clothing department, dry cleaners, Tesco direct and an opticians.
