GORNAL'S FA Vase campaign ended after a poor defensive display at a packed Moat Ground.

Gresley’s largest crowd of the season of 425, watched as the home side raced to a three goal advantage in the first fifteen minutes.

Their first came on ten minutes. Mark Willets lost possession in midfield as he was tackled by Jordi Gough who played the ball into the experienced Dean Oliver and he made no mistake firing a powerful shot past James Pemberton in the Gornal goal.

Two minutes later Gresley had doubled their lead. With the Gornal defence under pressure, an attempted clearance by Lee Wherton re-bounded off Gareth Langford into the path of Richard Hanslow. He raced into the Gornal area, turned inside Pete Wood and casually chipped the ball over Pemberton into the far corner off the post.

The stunned visitors were finding it difficult to contain a confident Gresley side, as the Gornal defence struggled to cope with the excellent movement of Hanslow and Oliver.

On 15 minutes a cross from the right wasn’t cleared and the ball came out to Gareth Langford who hit his shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Gornal began to regain some composure, and on twenty minutes they had their first chance of the game.

A ball from Kristian Green found Marvin Nisbett down the right, he turned inside the defender, unfortunately his shot shot hit Matt Martin and went just wide.

Four minutes later the visitors pulled a goal back. A Pete Wood throw in found Lee Wherton and he laid the ball into Matt Martin, who hit a superb shot from twenty five yards which beat the experienced Hateley in the Gresley goal.

On the half hour mark, as Gornal pressed for a second goal, Gresley regained their advantage.

A cross field ball from Lee Wherton was cut out by Tom Betteridge and then his long pass wasn’t cleared by the undecisive Mark Willets, allowing Dean Oliver to place his shot passed the oncoming Pemberton.

Gornal started the second half with a more positive attitude and a reasonable amount of possession which resulted in them reducing the deficit again. On 60 minutes a long ball from Robin Keates found Marvin Nisbett, who raced past the Gresley defence and hit his shot into the far corner to make it 4-2.

Gresley always looked comfortable and in control of the game and on 65 minutes had another chance, a Richard Anslow shot coming off the bar to be cleared by Chris Waterhouse on the line.

On 70 minutes, manager Ian Rowe decided it was time to try and get something from the game.

All three substitutes were used, Danny Ashton replaced Matt Weyman, Richard Young replaced the injured Robin Keates.

Ravi Sangha replaced Mark Willets allowing Gornal to change to a 3 – 4 – 3 formation as they pushed for more goals.

The final twenty minutes of the game saw Gornal create very few good opportunities to trouble the home defence.
