TYPHOON fighter jets spotted flying across the borough are preparing for the forthcoming Olympic Games.

The jets were first spotted flying over Dudley, Stourbridge, Kingswinford and Halesowen around 1pm yesterday and made a re-appearance again this lunchtime, making a “deafening” noise as they flew by.

RAF officials said the operation was a familiarisation of the air space, as part of security plans ahead of the London Olympic Games and the jets were travelling from RAF Coningsby, in Lincolnshire.

RAF spokesman Wing Commander Martin Tinworth said: “I appreciate it is rather unusual for people in the area to see Typhoon jets, but this is just a familiarisation training exercise as part of an ongoing security exercise in preparation for the Olympic Games.

“They are British planes, being flown by British pilots, in British airspace and people may spot more of them in the coming weeks.”
