Dudley MP slams affordable housing figures
2:20pm Friday 15th June 2012 in News
DUDLEY North MP Ian Austin has slammed new figures which have revealed the number of affordable housing in the borough has fallen by 70 per cent.
Building work began on just 72 new homes last year, compared to 240 in 2010.
With official projections showing households in the West Midlands are expected to increase by around 18,000 per annum up to 2030, the MP is calling on the Government to take action.
Ian Austin MP said: “The Government is failing families in Dudley who are in desperate need of a home. We have a growing housing crisis and the Government’s policies are making it worse. “I want to see the Government take action by repeating the bankers’ bonus tax to fund 25,000 new affordable homes while proposing a one year cut in VAT on home improvements, repairs and maintenance to help homeowners, small businesses and create much needed jobs and apprenticeships.
“The £4 billion cut to the affordable housing budget not only led to a disastrous collapse in affordable house building over the past year but hit the construction and house building industries hard, helping tip us back into double-dip recession.”

Driving to work this morning I passed the Taylor Wimpey outrage off Cinder Road where a wildlife oasis is being bulldozed to make way for housing.
Surely an opportunity (if the Dudley news is quick) to get a photographer down there to capture what the area was like before it disappears forever. The paper might also want to investigate why advertising boards offering housing on the site pre-dated the meeting of the council to grant permission?

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!
Mr Austin you and your party didn't give a thought to the "Housing Problem", never mind the Education or the NHS in this country when you were in power, when you instigated the mass immigration policy, it is no good you blaming your rivals now.
From the "Office of National Statistics" figures show that 237,000 people enterd this country in 2008, up 25% from the previous year, So where did you think where these people would live?, and we still get folks trying to tell use, the "housing problem" is nothing to do with immigation!!
Mr Austin is trying to slam this Government on there housing policy......Well, he should just look at his Parties record. i have just had a quick look about your housing figures for 1997 to 2008. It shows that 18,428 homes a year were built under Labour, most of these in the "Private Sector" that just shows how your "Social" conscience worked.
While before that under a Conservative Government 40,538 houses were built each year, i know the way folk go on about "Figures" but even if the figures for the Tory's were half right, they still put you to shame.
It's no good you shouting how the Government is letting people down now, the only Government in Recent History who have "Drastically" let the people of this Country down is the Labour Party.
From an hard working tax payer, seeing all his taxes squandered away by Labour.... Oh, by the way, a life long Labour voter until 2001.........Never again!!
