Community games launches today
8:30am Friday 22nd June 2012 in News
DUDLEY’S youngest sports stars are warming up for the St Thomas’s Community Games.
More than 100 pupils from Kates Hill, Sledmere, Blowers Green, St Joseph’s, St Edmund and St John, Castle High and Hillcrest schools will be taking part in the three week event which kicks off in style today.
Launching with a torch relay through Dudley market place, a parade will lead into the grounds of Dudley Castle, where the opening event will take place.
Following the opening extravaganza the games will include inter-school tournaments including rounders, cricket and basketball, as well as family fun days, football tournaments, walks and a toddler Olympics.
The games will culminate on July 13 with an awards and celebration evening at Dudley Concert Hall.
Games chairman and St Thomas’s ward councillor, Shaukat Ali, said: “It is really great to have this event this year at the same time we are celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the arrival of the Olympic torch into Dudley.
“Various schools and community groups have been working hard together to make sure the games happen again and I am sure it will be a fantastic event.”
