A GAME-for-a-laugh Dudley headteacher kept her word and ran a charity race dressed head to-toe in an array of fancy dress items.

Kind-hearted Year Eight students at Castle High school organised the fundraising ‘Race at your Place’ event in aid of Cancer Research UK at their St James’s Road school.

Supporting the initiative, headteacher Michelle King vowed to take part in the race herself and set a target of £1,000 for the pupils to raise, promising to add an additional fancy dress item when particular fundraising milestones were reached.

Smashing the total and raising £1,210.30 Miss King therefore ran the race in 16 items including a tiger all-in-one suit, teeny boppers, a feather boa, sunglasses, lab goggles, a wig, a Wolves FC shirt and a tutu.

The pupils, who were sponsored for taking part, also donned pink to highlight the cause and ran for as long as they could around their school field.

For every 250 metres reached, the pupils were given vivo reward stamps which they can then use in their school reward shop.

Other fundraisers held at the school for Cancer Research UK included a sweet sale, an online fundraising page and a Coppers for Cancer collection, which raised £400 – with the winning form treated to an outing to the cinema to watch the new Spiderman movie.

Heather Buttery, student voice co-ordinator, said: “It was a really great event.

“Thankfully the weather brightened up in the afternoon after heavy rain in the morning, so we were able to get outside, but it was really hot and oppressive so the children managed about seven laps each.

“But they did really well and we are thrilled with the amount we’ve raised.”
