Tributes to teenager found dead at Lower Gornal quarry

TRIBUTES have been paid to a teenager who died yesterday after he jumped into a pool at a quarry in Lower Gornal .
Augusto Massampo Zacarias's body was recovered from the pool, known locally as Blue Lagoon, at 8.25pm yesterday (Wednesday).
The youngster's age was originally given as 14 but West Midlands Police this morning confirmed Augusto celebrated his birthday last week and was 15 years old.
He is believed to live in Portugal and was in the UK on holiday with relatives.
A Facebook site dedicated to his memory has already received more than 1,000 'likes' and touching tributes from people mourning his loss.
Marie Hurst said: "So so sad, RIP sweetheart, I've heard so much about you from Georgia, how you made her laugh, you sang together, and you were all ready very good friends. God only takes the best, and you will always be the best, sleep tight."
A major search operation began after the alarm was raised at around 1pm when Augustus failed to surface after he entered the water, believed to be about 20 feet deep, at the pool which near of the Crooked House pub.
Police, ambulance and fire service officers, the West Midlands Police helicopter and a specialist underwater search team were deployed.
A police spokesperson described conditions at the scene as challenging, due to the nature of the terrain and almost zero visibility in the water.
