Dudley Library fire forces temporary closure

DUDLEY Library has been closed until Saturday following a fire in the public toilets.

The small blaze was spotted in the unisex facilities at around 5.12pm yesterday by a member of staff.

The St James’s Road library was evacuated as firefighters from Dudley and Brierley Hill arrived to put out the flames.

Crews left the scene at 5.57pm and the building remained closed for the remainder of the day.

However extensive dust from the fire smoke has forced the library to remain closed today as specialist cleaners are brought in to tackle the mess.

Councillor Khurshid Ahmed , cabinet member for housing, libraries and adult learning, said:"The damage caused by the fire has been contained to the toilet cubicle but the smoke did cause wide spread deposits of dust within the library.

"The library will remain closed today as specialist cleaners are being brought in and it is anticipated the library will remain closed tomorrow, re-opening on Saturday. We apologise to people for any inconvenience caused."
