Council set to honour Lenny
ONE of Dudley’s most famous faces is set to be given the honour of Freedom of the Borough.
Councillors are set to hold an extraordinary meeting of full council on Monday October 8 to approve the decision to honour Dudley-born comedian, actor, charity fundraiser and television presenter,
Lenny Henry.
Following the meeting Lenny will be invited to a special celebratory dinner later in the year where he will be presented with a traditional Freedom of the Borough scroll.
The decision to honour the comic, who has also helped raise millions of pounds for charity by fronting Comic Relief, has received support from both political parties.
Councillor David Sparks, leader of the council, said: “It is with great pleasure that we are offering one of Dudley’s proudest sons the Freedom of Dudley.
The council wants to bestow this honour on Lenny to recognise his services to entertainment and also to recognise his outstanding contribution to charity.”
Councillor Les Jones, leader of the opposition, added: “Lenny Henry is one of Dudley’s most famous faces who has been a regular on stage and screen for many years. He has also supported high profile charities and by offering him the Freedom of the Borough, the council will be recognising this work.”
- Meanwhile Lenny is set to return to his roots on Friday when he will be stopping off at borough foundry, Thomas Dudley Ltd, on Birmingham New Road, where he will be officially unveiling a new multi-million pound moulding line.
